Task 4: 1000 word Evaluation

This was the first assignment that I took part in within the Level 3 Creative Media course, That it has allowed me to gain a better understanding of the skills and techniques that I will need to apply to my future assignments to come. To begin the assignment I researched a variety of products that I could include in my project, such as different kinds of drinks, shoes and headphones. With headphones eventually being the product I would be advertising. The first idea that I developed for the project would have involved paint being thrown at people wearing the specific brand of headphones, representing a fun, colourful aspect to the product, the inspiration for this idea was from the 'Beats By Dr, Dre Studio Color Campaign' video found on YouTube. Unfortunately, I was unable to make this idea a reality because it was not easy to find a suitable and available location to be able to throw paint due to the mess it would most likely make. With the decision of not going forward with producing a video with my original idea, I then decided that I needed to instead focus on an actual idea for a video that would be much easier for me to accomplish, and I was soon able to find a new video that I feel would promote my product very well., this video being the 'Beats By Dre Color Commercial' which can also be found on YouTube. This video instead features different actors dancing or showing their interests onscreen as music is played in the background. I feel that I would be able to produce a video like this much more easily than my first idea whilst still producing a product of high quality

When it comes to my very first advert idea with the use of paint, I began to think of what kind of props i could use, I didn't wanna spend so much money on actual Beats headphones to then end up ruining them with paint, so i decided on looking for some plain white headphones that would still provide a similar effect but save me money and effort. Also, due to the price of the Beats headphones, it would be much more difficult to replace them if something had gone wrong during filming. As I wanted Slow motion to be a big part of my video i decided to experiment with throwing water at one of my classmates to then edit it to see what it looked like when slowed down. It was difficult to understand what I could have happen in my advert the way i want the paint to be thrown, the classmate wasn't cooperating very well as I could tell she was very irritated by having water thrown at her even though she volunteered but still was the only one that was okay with getting wet I then went back into the classroom and uploaded all the footage that was filmed to my computer And began editing it together then applying the slow motion effect using the speed duration to 50% with the help of my tutor providing me with the information about setting the speed to not being too slow and at least have some of the motion looking a normal speed. I thought it was very clever and made me feel that my advert could work with the use of this technique. If I could go back and change a few things about my experiment I would have researched more on what to have the individual do in the situation of having water thrown at them, I could have used more of a setting for the background instead of just a plain white background that I originally thought would work good for my actual idea because i was gonna be using coloured paint, even tho i was using water i could have made it easier to notice it on the peers face since the white background did hide the water very easily.

As I was unable to go along with my first advert idea I then found another youtube video that inspired me to create a similar video for my project. I began to start video testing by using the studio and my peers to see what my real footage of my advert would actually look like, While i was testing it helped me figure out what good lighting and positions my peers needed to be in for my video. When i went back into the classroom to see the footage I just took which the lighting didn't seem to be that great but it was simply easy enough to edit the colours on Premiere Pro by the help of my tutor. I accidentally had the setting on my camera set to a different frame size which made it look more square but in my opinion it did really make the video look like a old little advert you see appear on tv, I made the video and posted it on my youtube channel which I have also linked on to my website next to my Final Advert.

Starting my advert was very well planned out I made sure that I had enough time to film for that one week and be able to start editing the week after even though i did start to edit earlier during the filming week because I finished filming very quickly. During filming I set up the studio putting up the white background and making sure that I positioned the lights in the same area as they were for my testing shots but with little changes since knowing that some of the lighting wasn't that great from the testing shots. When it came to filming I had my peers stand in different positions of the screen with the different coloured headphones and just had them dance around while having actual music playing in the background.. Whilst I was filming I was able to have a few peers that weren't being filmed in the control room recording some behind the scenes footage for me. I feel that my filming went very well because I was able to get good shots even though i had trouble with the lighting for my video but i did sort it out with some help from using the colour correction selection tool found on Premiere Pro. What i could have done better when filming to improve the quality of my project would be to make sure i had the same lighting on each video clip i shot so that I wouldn't have to edit so much of the white whilst editing. During editing i found it very hard to find the right music for my video since i left music to last after filming which could be a improvement for next time I will choose the music before I start to film to make filming a lot easier as I will be able to just begin filming instead of organizing my actors. If I had the music chosen then the peers could have been dancing to the beat of the song but instead I had to edit to the beat for my advert.

Strengths

I would say a strength I have come across during my project would be the Final editing part because since editing my past videos it has been a big change to learning to edit to the beat and using a different software as my normal usual editing software. I feel that my editing has improved the quality of my project because it allowed me to produce in much more of a professional looking advert which would be a benefit to when my project is graded. Another strength would be the organization of knowing when to film and when to edit on an exact week that allowed me to complete my work on time.

Weakness

A weakness with my project would be knowing that my Pre production would need to be done before i start film production of my advert. If I had done this it would have allowed me to do more research on the style that I would need to capture for my advert, which in turn, would have increased the quality of my project. Throughout my future assignments I will make sure to do this to increase the chances of getting higher grades. From this weakness I also learned how important pre production is to a project as it will allow me to be much more organized during the production and post production stages of a project.

To conclude, I have learnt that I should have thought more about my Pre production at the start more than the actual production of my advert and now that I know this I will be much more prepared for my future projects. I Will now be able to apply the skills from editing this project to help me when I am editing my future projects on the course. I feel this project has helped me to learn a lot about what it's like to work on creative media project and I look forward to learning more skills during my time on this course.
