Music Video- Part 1

According to Dan Moller (2011) A music video is a short film that combines a song with imagery which is produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Although music videos date back to the musical short films that first appeared in the 1920s they came again in the 1980s when the channel MTV ( “music television”) based their format around it. These videos were described in various terms including “illustrated song”, “Promotional film, clip or video” and also “song video, clip” or “film clip”.
Firth (1988) identified the three types of music videos, Performance, Narrative and Concept (Conceptual).
Performance is one of the most common types that you see a lot when watching music videos. Artists like that their live performance shots are showing real life situations with their music These videos will focus more on close ups of the artist and give a visual style to their music and what they want people to know about the type of artist they are. It also still reminds the viewer that the soundtrack is still very important. Music videos demonstrates genre characteristics (Andrew Goodwin)

Narrative music videos are followed by many events, telling us a story whilst relating to the lyrics. A most common found type of narrative lyric video you would see is love which is a huge part of music videos. It is almost like a mini movie with a start, middle and end to it. Schwichtenberg, 1992 noted that the action in the story is dominated by the males who do things that the females react or wait for something to happen. There is a relationship between lyrics and visual. (Andrew Goodwin)

Firth also notified that Concept or also known as conceptual which is another type of music videos that you can find relying on poems being mostly metaphors. It creates more of a mood and feeling to its videos then rather a story, creating many meanings for the viewer to notice. Most concept videos can be surreal to many audiences which draws them into watching more of them and makes them successful. If you put your imagination to it when watching these videos it can go far on. There is a relationship between music and visuals.(Andrew Goodwin)

Andrew Goodwin points out the characteristics and features in music videos, how music videos demonstrate the different kind of genres in his book ‘The distraction Factory’. As he would say “Music videos are simply an extension of the lyrics.”
Context awareness is a property of mobile devices that is defined complementarily to location awareness. Where the location may determine how certain processes around a contributing device operates, the context may be applied more flexibly with mobile users.
In this music video by the band Bye Beneco for their song Overwhelm can be based as a live performance but its not classified as live performance because if you were to make it a more live on stage performance, it wouldn't fit in, since you can tell the video is made the way they want the music to be shown while also being live. They have it set in a forest looking location with many different instruments and people from the band. Camera angles that are taken in this video is very smooth they pan around the middle showing all the different people using instruments whilst singing. It keeps going back and forth around in circles. Ending with all of them all together. It makes it more lively that they did it in a public place where as you can see people in the background. The video will be below.

R5 did a live performance in London that they decided to make a live performance music video for it. The first few shots showed the location of London which i think really put the video together for the start. It's a good live performance video because it shows both the band and the audience which is the point of the video. With the text at the start it makes it feel like its gonna be a usual music video but then it shows that its a live performance for the band. It makes you feel as though you are actually there.

In Sigrids music video for her song Strangers I would say it is very close to being a abstract narrative because of the way the lyrics compare to the visuals you se in the music video like the first lyric you hear is "Just like in the movies" it shows her laying on what looks like a beach but soon it zooms out to a studio. It is almost like a behind the scenes of the music video. The concept in this video is that a few little bits show a lot of meaning towards anything to do with filming for artists and the way they make them. I would say this is one of my favorite music videos because it fits the song perfect through visuals and noticing how much fun the artist is having. Plus you can tell that she was really enjoying the filming of her own music video.

Grace Vanderwaals music video for her song so much more than this is very conceptual because it is very powerful meaning towards the song and I would also say its very narrative to the lyrics. They have used some very nice locations to change up the songs meaning.
Close up are used frequently in this music video to show her facial expression and emotion she feels in this song. You see how her expressions show frustration and anger and then soon turn into relief.

DJ Snake and Lauvs video for A Different Way I would say is very conceptual because the balloon is the one object through the whole video that you keep your mind on. It has a little bit of a story towards it. Showing the artist a few times is okay since its his music video. I like the concept of how the lyrics describe the balloon. This music video is different to others because instead of using expression for emotion, they use colour and dancing. At the beginning, you can tell the boy is upset by the colour blue that surrounds him. Throughout the video the colour lightens and the scenery becomes more colourful which indicates the boy feeling happier and less upset.

Now I would say this is a beautiful narrative music video with the popular common music video style you would see, the story of love. I would say I am proud of how this music video was put together showing the cycle of feelings the female has compared to the males. The lighting for the female is very light even though she feels upset and anger towards the situation with the male but still cares for him and their relationship, yet the male has a darker lighting which indicates that he doesn't think or care about the consequence his actions may cause towards the female.
