Progression Opportunities.

YEAR 1

My goal is to improve my skills as a cinematographer by using more cinematic shots in my work. I would do that by making sure my story board is more clean, more research into cinematography and talking to my peers. My main inspiration on wanting to be more of a cinematographer are my peers Joe and James. They have been able to make their own personal edits and some small videos that have their own meanings to it, which is what I have already done in the past before I started this course and had been doing more since starting this course,

YEAR 2

Goal : My goal is to improve more on my website and journal. To do this I'll be setting myself a schedule that I will stick to, once a week, on the last 30 minutes of Friday's I'll be saving and stopping all the work I'm doing and then going onto my journal pager the current project I'm making and write into it about my week, If I stick to the schedule and continue making a journal entry then I'll be hitting every task I'm assigned because if I can stick to this, I can do something else which then leads up to another task, etc. I'll also be applying to universities that the media course focuses more on the cinematic side of filming since that's my goal as a filmmaker. I haven't taken a look at any universities yet but I know about the university centre of Somerset however they tend to focus more on theory rather than cinematography so I know that it's not the right place for me.

Focus more on a lot of editing and filming videos enjoy it also at the same time knowing that you have to finish all projects for the website.

YEAR 3

Goal : Focusing on myself being a film maker, I'll be trying to figure out my own style by focusing more on setting up my shots making sure they are pretty and that it makes the audience want to look at my film. It shows that people are interested in my films and that the film itself looks professional. When in university I'll be even more independent on my own projects as thats what will be required of me alongside any other outside work/work experience which I will be managing fairly alongside university. My course work in university will also allow me to find myself as a filmmaker as they'll give me a lot more room to work with. I'll be even more independant than I am now as each project that is assigned to me makes sure that my tutor won't help out as a secondary school teacher does, thus allowing me to explore myself and find what makes me a filmmaker.

YEAR 4

Goal : I will be working mostly on making my own freelance website whilst still being in university. The freelance website will be a side project as university is more important at the moment however starting this website will help me build up a portfolio for potential clients. The work that I'll be producing inside my website will be my own personal edits for when I take road trips or take my camera out, I'll be making sure that these days out will be more explorative for myself as both a filmmaker and as a person. I'll also be making sure that the work I create is professional as this is a business website not a student one.

YEAR 5

Goal : As this will most likely be my last year of university I'll be looking at runner jobs throughout the whole year and trying to build up a portfolio to show to potential clients/companies, I'll be putting university as my number one priority as that will help me get a job in the media industry and also help me build up contacts for the future, the number one tip that I was told is that having a large number of contacts can help me find a job in the future. I'll still be constantly adding to my freelance website so that it'll help me find jobs after university.

On the London trip I wanted to make the video show the feeling of how happy and fun London is for lots of people and the sights. As you can also see I focus a lot on editing to the beat. One shot that I enjoyed editing was where there was a animal as the song clicks after the person walks past it, the light turns off. The reason I focused on editing was because I wanted to make a fun, fast-paced video that can keep the audience intrigued in it.

One of my other peers that have inspired me on this course is Joe Edmondson who also does the same kind of thing as James which I like. The video that I picked shows he doesn't just use music he also uses a person talking about inventing your self and the shots he uses mean something towards what the speaker is saying, I like these type of videos becasuse yet again they have meaning to them just the wayJames has done to his with the use of music, shots and the coloring grading.

One of the peers in my college class that have given me inspiration since starting this course are James Griffiths, I have chosen this specific video as an example why because I find the way he made the video give you a feel towards it which he does in many videos but I just like the way he picks such good songs for them that makes a plus to when people watch the video.

Research into Jobs

The culture of Film and TV production such have a big part to see if more junior roles can carry out jobs without a lot of supervision and have a ‘can do’ attitude towards their roles. These qualities are very useful because when something happens on set the senior members of the team need to know that they can always rely on the rest of the team to keep the department together.

Someone who has made a good impression is usually the one offered the job or given a strong reference if the production doesn’t have any openings at the time.

The next step from accounts trainee is to move to the role of assistant production accountant which happens when the trainee has consistently shown the ability to work on their own. The route would have to depend on the size of budget and whether it is for Film or television.

On a small production there would only be one assistant rather than a lot. The role will require a lot of understanding as they may have responsibilities across many areas like for instance payroll, accounts payroll and petty cash.

On a medium production the new assistant would be taking on a more specialized role such as being responsible for the administration of petty cash.

On a larger production you are most likely to join a team of other assistants whose position is noted by moving towards being the first assistant production accountant.

Production accountant is the next role which requires analytical and strategic skills and experience as well as interpersonal skills such as high level people in management. It also requires a understanding of how a production works and how film and television are financed.

They can take on small production jobs from their own office and they may also work in post-production which allows for shorter days and more predictability since the production is no longer running,

Medium sized television productions may have a senior production accountant overseeing multiple assistant production.

People move from production accounting into more production roles like production co-ordinator, production manager, line producer or producer depending on the lever of experience you have developed. It’s very useful to understand the financial side of production for someone working in the production team.

Other possible routes would be working on set, starting as a runner and working as a portfolio accountant for a broadcaster. Any role on a production will allow you to have a good look into the kind of challenges faced on production. People have moved from those on set roles because they begin to like the more crafting services such as the art, design costumes or any other assistant director roles. Another route would be starting as a runner which is a common route into production accounting, working closely with the production accounting department allows the person to understand how the activities of other teams impact the budget holders. Experienced production accountants believe they are able to say they worked in a junior role in a different department.

Working for a broadcaster can be very effective in ways to develop skills and a lot of experience in production accounting. Since they are responsible for a portfolio of productions ranging from children’s programming to comedy and dramas.

It is worth knowing some areas of the industry qualifications more than others. Freelance senior production accountants or financial controllers on large films must have a good track record for large film productions in order to be approved by the financiers of the production. Doing this training early in your career as experienced production accountants suggested that having this level of understanding of accounting is useful throughout your career.

When getting started in in a career you’d need certain experience to be able to choose which route is for you and if you have enough experience for that role.
