Research

Research is a very important part of a creative media project. It helped with a more specific view on what your idea could be. Theres many research sources the I am able to look for to help me. A common thing media students do is look into the background of the topic, finding the small bits and pieces that will make up the project. There are three different type of reasons for researching in the media industry, the first being Audience Research. Communication is such a big thing. The feedback I gather everyday from one another, either positive or negative helps us learn from our mistakes and just keep working more to make any improvement or even keep doing what you were originally doing. Focus groups are to see how well the target research we all found in a discussion and many adjustments are made according to the feedback. We were able to do that for all the year ones talking about their final major ideas and got a lot of feedback on one idea that everyone likes and put their thoughts to which helped forward my project more.
The second reason for researching in the media industry is market research which is the gathering of the information about the target audience, which helps to know what type of audience you have to work towards meeting their needs. Since my project Is on social media its a very popular subject that has such a big audience for it. They watch those specific videos on youtube either a short film or a documentary on social media, which I will be making one of those. The research and information and research I found from watching those videos my self inspired me for my project. The third and final reason would be production research with helping for the production of the project. It is much needed development for a new project. It focuses on how its made. Financing and cost I part of the production research but thats not really anything to do with out college course but it is for later on in the industry to make sure it can be released for the people to see.
Primary research can be to use a book for a research or a focus group as said before, people give their own opinions which can be used to keep moving forwards during the project. Some potential sources of research are print materials like for instance journals, magazines and books again, etc. Websites on the web, research organisations,surveyss/questionaires,reviews and critiques can be some other potential research sources. So in conclusion to the three reasons of research being so important is to meet the audiences needs and expectations also planning ahead of production. The techniques and skills I will be using I haven't yet used often for many of the past projects except for one, which is audio recording with a TASCAM whilst filming, have to make sure I have the right distance so the audio coms out clear. I already know how to set up the studio for part of the production for interviews the way I used it at the start of the year for my first ever project which was for my advert I had every stand infant of a white background. the layout may change since its a more serious video subject then my advert where that one was fun and energetic. The issues I hope not to counter whilst doing this project is most likely the audio, hopefully it will record clearly. What makes a professional product similar to my chosen product is the skills and techniques I put into the camera work mostly with angles and movements I can do to make my video look professional, also the writing for my video should be professional and I am going for. meaningful poetic kind of feeling to what I want said in my video to make the audience feel mixed emotions towards the video.
For my final major I wanted to make a documentary which mean I would have to search up the different types of documentaries that we actually went through with our lecturer to make sure we knew what type of goals we were trying to reach at the end of this project. Documentarys can't be considered the truth but the evidence to show the fact or situation with the process from the history of the story. They are there to record, reveal, persuade, promote ad analyse the world in a more or less art shaping matter. There is six different modes of documentaries which my final major has come across two of them. The first out of the six is the Expository which is a classic documentary based on showing a argument with the use of images. It gives a rhetorical feeling to the audience using phrases to the guide the images and emphasize the idea of the argument. The second mode out of the six is observational which I have felt my final major has been part of this mode. Since mine is observing peoples views on social media and seeing people in public on their phones is observing them with out becoming involved with what they are doing.
It is a different approach to the subject since its a direct observation of reality. Third of all is participatory which presents a relationship between the filmmaker and the subject being filmed. A director becomes the investigator and enters unknown territory, participating in other peoples lives gaining experience from the film. The fourth mode is reflexive which raises the audiences awareness of the meaning of reperesenting itself. Basically the behind the scenes of how a video has been recorded. Showing the truth of what has happened during editing filming etc. The next mode is Poetic, at first I thought of doing a poetic documentary about social media but I couldn't really figure out a way of finding a poem to work on illustrating a video with it. I got the idea from one of the year two classmates that had made a poetic documentary on perception which I thought was a very good video she showed lot of visuals to the poem. The aim is to create a specific mood and tone then to just provide the audience with information. I wanted my video to aim for that swell so my video is little poetic but not just using a poem but the choice of wording I will put in my final major. The last mode of documentaries is Performance which focuses on the way they express the desire in either poetic and rhetoric for realistic representation. Documentary is there to achieve something like entertaining the audiences.

During my research I had found a couple videos that had inspired me for my idea of a documentary about the subject social media. The first video I have come upon was the look up video by Gary turk who starts it off by speaking the the audience watching the youtube video which I felt was very moving, a story line was added alongside everything the man was saying about what social media does to people. When I first saw this video a few months ago before I even started this specific project I knew that I wanted to make a video just like it to move the audience in a way it moved me. Every video that I make for my college or in my spare time I always think of the audience everytime knowing that I wanna make them enjoy it and make them think more after they have watched it or even watch it as many times as they want. When you take a look at this video I hope it moves you the way it moved me.

I had watched a few more documentaries that I had felt hd more interviews in them then the first video I had watched. This gave me more of a thought about having a couple interviews thrown into my video aside with have a small storyline next to it. The second video I had seen was about the fear of missing out which you think could be about any type of subject but it is to do with social media and they way people use it and how it turns out to be. I think that this video especially uses a lot of interviews and mean a lot. Which I know from what I've seen at college is not a good idea to do since you'd need more B roll so people won't get to bored whilst watching the video.

The last video. had found was a short film because I did have the thought of doing either a documentary or a short film at the start but then after the focus group with everyone at college I decided to go straight with the documentary. In this short film it had a lot of effects showing the use of social media and how that person lives their life behind the phone screen I felt that this film was very moving and I could see myself planning all this and being able to produce this but on another note I did think of how I was in the first year with not much experience yet to be making big projects like that even though I am making a documentary that we hadn't even been given the unit until next year I felt I knew more from what I have seen the year twos do with it more then short films.
