Augmented Research Essay

 

Augmented Reality is a “live view of a physical and real world looking environment” which is made by a computer generated or extracted to be real. It really brings out the many parts of the digital world into a person’s real worlds. You could say augmented reality is transforming the world of education where a lot of content may be accessed by scanning or viewing an image with your mobile phone. “A person’s primary task should not be computing but being human.” I like this quote in a way I understand that augmented reality shows that it’s just not a fun computing system, it is something that you do to make you feel human, its changing the world the more people use it. Throughout the 20th century AR has developed into the refined technology that now exists today. A professor named Tom Caudell from Boeing Computer services in Seattle was searching for a new way to help the manufacturing process and began to use some of the virtual reality technology so then came up with a piece of software that had the ability to overlap the positions of where things were meant to be place in the building process.

 

There are many different types of AR technology’s that can be found not just on your mobile phone as they were maybe one of the first objects to experience augmented reality. AR is big in retail because customers can see brands and the stock in a new way which engages them on a new level. For instance IKEA’s AR catalogue which they launched in the summer of 2013 to enable shoppers to visualise how furniture would look inside their own home. Snapchat being a camera use app for your phone lets you have access to augmented reality through camera filters. In September 2017, Snapchat updated its app to include a different camera filter to what they already have which allowed users to have their own animated, cartoon version of themselves called “Bitmoji”. The United States army is giving soldiers the use of AR called “Tactical Augmented Reality” TAR which is an eyepiece that helps them locate not only their positions by also locations of others.

 

Augmented reality is being used more now in schools across the world and people are having many discussions on if it is appropriate for education purposes. It may have the power to reduce any bullying that happens in school, since some kids are very shy but when they come across technology they seem to open up and become more accepted by their peers. It’s a very useful to help bring children working together. Augmented reality provides new and safer ways to show practices like for instance for things like military training, doctors and nursing or any other environments that could be very dangerous to work with. They seem to make it easier to get instant feedback about the outcomes. What is a problem towards augmented reality is that it invades your privacy because just like modern technologies on the market they can be likely to do data hacks as well. A lot of data is connected to these virtual environments. People worry that their personal data might be used. Another problem would be you could lose human interaction since when you can experience the world from your living room you wouldn’t need to leave the house which isn’t really heathy.

Layar is a mobile browser that lets you find items based upon augmented reality technology it has the following uses like a built in camera to scan the augmented reality poster, compass and a GPS. They are helpful with the app finding out the users location and field of view. A advantage for this would be that people can see how clever it is to see a poster come to life in the palm of your hands but obviously a disadvantage is most people wouldn’t have the app so then they can’t join in seeing this reality. They have multiple products such as The Layar app, The Layar Creator, The Layar SDK, Layar branded App Solutions and Layar Connect API. The computer site lets you make the poster as the app does too.

 

Augmented Reality will have a huge impact on society, it will help the marketing and advertisement fields grow strong with augmented reality devices. Drivers will like the idea of having good navigation devices which will be built into cars and mobile devices, this is actually already in the works with some car manufactures.
